Temporal changes in rainfall intensity–duration thresholds for post-wildfire flash floods in southern California

چکیده

Abstract. Rainfall intensity–duration (ID) thresholds are commonly used to assess flash flood potential downstream of burned watersheds. High-intensity and/or long-duration rainfall is required generate floods as landscapes recover from fire, but there little guidance on how change a function time since fire. Here, we force hydrological model with radar-derived precipitation estimate ID for post-fire in 41.5 km2 watershed southern California, USA. Prior work this study area constrains temporal changes parameters, allowing us thresholds. The results indicate that increase by more than factor 2 year 1 5. Thresholds based averaging intensity over durations 15–60 min perform better those average shorter intervals. Moreover, the 75th percentile 25th or 50th intensity. Results demonstrate models can be following disturbance and provide metrics best suited predicting floods.

Extreme flash floods in Barcelona County

In this paper the catastrophic and extraordinary floods occurring in Barcelona County (Catalonia, NE Spain) are studied, in order to characterise the temporal evolution of extreme flash floods in that area and their main features. These events usually cause economical losses and major problems for undertaking daily activity in Barcelona city. This kind of floods is a very common feature in the ...

Temporal properties of rainfall events in Calabria (southern Italy)

Temporal properties of 152 575 rainfall events, recorded at time steps of 5 min, having different durations and occurring between 1989 and 2008 at 155 localities of Calabria (Italy), have been analysed in this paper. Samples from 45 533 storms have been selected to classify rainfall events as “significant” with regard to their contribution to soil erosion, flooding and/or other geo-hydrological...

Estimating Live Fuel Moisture from MODIS Satellite Data for Wildfire Danger Assessment in Southern California USA

The goal of the research reported here is to assess the capability of satellite vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard both Terra and Aqua satellites, in order to replicate live fuel moisture content of Southern California chaparral ecosystems. We compared seasonal and interannual characteristics of in-situ live fuel moisture with satellite vegetation ...

Monitoring post-burn recovery of chaparral vegetation in southern California using multi-temporal satellite data

Monitoring the post-burn recovery condition of chaparral vegetation in southern California is important for managers to determine the appropriate time to conduct controlled burns. Due to the di culty of monitoring post-® re recovery over large areas and the absence of detailed ® re records in many areas, we examined the possibility of using satellite observations to establish the post® re reco...

The 20 February 2010 Madeira flash-floods: synoptic analysis and extreme rainfall assessment

This study aims to characterise the rainfall exceptionality and the meteorological context of the 20 February 2010 flash-floods in Madeira (Portugal). Daily and hourly precipitation records from the available rain-gauge station networks are evaluated in order to reconstitute the temporal evolution of the rainstorm, as its geographic incidence, contributing to understand the flash-flood dynamics...
